Brief history of Shettleston Juniors

At the begining of the 20th century the village of Shettleston in Glasgow's East end had no junior team to call it's own this was all to change only one year later.  It was in 1903 Shettleston F & AC were formed by officials of several local boys clubs ...the lion had been born.  After only one year in football Shettleston won entry to the Glasgow Junior league and were among some of the big boys of Glasgow Junior football.  During The Seccond World War many clubs went to the wall for a number of reason however Shettleston were not to die and survived as a club however the post War finances of Britian were not to buy-pass Town and were voted out of Glasgows big junior league after 14 years in 1918.

Club officials were in a state of outrage at Towns Voting out of the League however Shettleston came out fighting and joined the Glasgow & District Junior League in 1918/1919 for a brief spell later joining the highly regarded Scottish Junior League later that season.  For three season Shettleston played opposition from far and wide before re-joining the more regional set up in 1921 in the form of the origional Glasgow Junior League proving to be a success with the winning of the championship in 1923-1924 and again in 1926-1927 feturing players like Archie"the penalty king"Lindsay as goalkeeper later of Falkirk and Porstmouth.

In 1932 Town joined the new Central League and have stayed there until 2002, a 70 year spell before the new Ayrshire-Central merger came into action.  1933 seen Town move home to the current base of Greenfield Park after the origional Well Park was purchases for housing.  Two gems emerged from Greenfield Park in a twenty year period during the 40's and 50's with Tommy Docherty moving to Celtic in 48 and Jackie Hood linking up with English Giants in 58 for an incrediable £1,200.

Arguably our most succesful period arrived during the late 50's and mid 60's with Shettleston's only Junior Cup Final appearance in 1959 infront of over 65,000 fans at Hampden Park to be defeated by Irvine MedowXI 2-1.  Although seccess was still fourthcoming with Town winning four section league titles and a three year period of Town winnig The Glasgow Junior Cup each season.  The 1970's shows a Shettleston upturn although it was to be brief with Town clinching The Sectional League Cup in 1976 and again in 1979 and the Central A League in the 76/77 season thanks to additions like Bobby Russel(a rangers great) during that period of domination.

Over the past two decades succes at Greenfield has been hard to come by, four trophies won in the 80's, the B Divison Tittle in 86 and four Erskine Hospital Charity cups in 84, 85 and 86.  The early to mid 90's seen Jack McCartney's sides winning two West of Scotland Cups only for money to dry up. Due to an unforgiving commitee, who were later disposed of. significent strides have been made in the O.V.D Junior Cup with semi-final and quarter finals apparances to be seen as a mark of improvment.  2001-2002 seen Town win promotion the the new Superleague First division after winnig the Central 1st Divison and the triumph over Johnstone in the Central League Cup Final ending a great season, thanks to new boss Hugh Kelly
